ATHEROSCLEROSIS

DEFINITION:– a condition where the blood vessel walls contain     atheromas (patchy deposits of fatty material), leading to reduced or blocked blood flow

Symptoms:

Coronary arteries narrowed –

  • Chest pain (angina)

Coronary arteries blocked –

  • heart attack
  • abnormal heart rhythms
  • heart failure

Carotid arteries blocked –

  • Stroke

Arteries in legs narrowed –

  • Leg cramps

Arteries supplying 1/both kidneys narrowed or blocked –

  • Kidney failure
  • Dangerously high blood pressure

Causes:

  • High cholesterol
  • Repeated injury to artery wall through various mechanisms involving the immune system (inflammation) or through direct toxicity (bacterial or viral infection that damages the lining of an artery’s wall)

Risk factors –

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • High levels of Homocysteine in the blood

Lifestyle Recommendations

  • Get plenty of exercise and keep the brain intellecEat high-fibre food, low in fat and cholesterol (primarily fruits, vegetables and grains)
  • Eat foods rich in vitamin E to improve circulation (dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, soy beans, wheat germ, whole grains)
  • Use only pure cold-pressed olive oil or unrefined canola oil as fats to lower cholesterol (do not heat)
  • Drink steam-distilled water only
  • Avoid junk food, stimulants, alcohol and tobacco
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Get regular moderate exercise
  • Reduce and avoid stress

Supplement Recommendations

  • Fresh garlic included daily in the diet is used to treat arteriosclerosis and regulate fat
  • Calcium (1 500 mg daily) and magnesium (750 mg daily) – to maintain proper muscle tone in blood vessels (chelate form), plus vitamin D3 (400 mg daily) – aids calcium uptake and enhances immunity
  • Co-enzyme Q10 (100 mg daily) – improves tissue oxygenation
